There are more than 1.5 million such stoves in the UK, with many people having switched to them to save cash on energy bills - but they could be doing more harm than good

Britons are facing a stark health warning this autumn, as experts raise the alarm about a common home heating method that might expose people to dangerous air pollutants. Over 1.5 million UK homes now harbour wood-burning stoves, spurred on by soaring energy costs driving residents towards seemingly cheaper alternatives.

Government warnings have been clear: "Burning at home, particularly with traditional house coal or wet wood, is a major source of the pollutant PM2.5 – which has been identified by the World Health Organisation as the most serious air pollutant for human health." In response, many UK areas have been designated as smoke control areas, imposing restrictions on burnable materials and stove types.

Government data also indicates that wood burning in urban areas contributes to thousands of premature deaths annually, with estimates suggesting up to 38,000 in England. The toxic particles from wood burning have been linked to serious health issues, including heart and lung diseases, dementia, and even mental illness in children.
