Drugmakers spent big on ads for weight loss and diabetes drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic. Meanwhile, the FDA approved the first AI diagnostic tool for sepsis.

Good afternoon! Drugmakers spent big on advertisements for weight loss and diabetes treatments last year as they wrestled for dominance in the booming market for those drugs.

Wegovy and Ozempic"have been at the forefront of advertising, endorsements from public figures and consistent media exposure, which contributes to the overall expenditure and has necessitated increased advertising investments to capture and expand market share," MediaRadar CEO Todd Krizelman told CNBC.

"We expect ad spending in the diabetes and weight loss category to remain strong or even increase as brands strive to capitalize on the growing market and demand," Krizelman said.MediaRadar compiled ad spending from national TV broadcasts, print publications, newspapers and websites, podcasts and social media platforms from Jan. 1, 2022 to Feb. 29, 2024.

Krizelman said the shift toward spending on TV ads is due to its"broader reach and ability to target" patients more likely to be impacted by diabetes and obesity. TV commercials also have a"higher impact in terms of trust and credibility compared to online channels," he added. Sepsis occurs when the body has an extreme response to an infection. It is notoriously challenging to diagnose, and often deadly. Around 1.7 million adults in the U.S. develop sepsis each year, and one in three patients who die in a hospital developed sepsis during that hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
