Heart of Midlothian FC deal with the aftermath of losing top scorer Lawrence Shankland and manager Stephen McInnes to rivals, while analyzing recruitment strategies and the influence of data-driven approaches under new ownership.
They were three minutes away from this being an all-timer, celebrating a title win as their captain lead the line for Scotland at the World Cup before a crack at the Champions League .
No matter which way you spin in, it' makes for brutal reading and it's not a good look.powering their recruitment and internally, this won't be seen as a disaster. For some, quite the opposite. There's no dressing up the fact that losing Shankland and McInnes to a direct rival is a blow. There's nothing Hearts could do to stop the Shankland deal, bar not including a break clause in his contract last season.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of that, it was in there. McInnes was appointed before Tony Bloom sunk £10million into the Gorgie club last August after putting them and Jamestown together months before that. McInnes wasn't his pick, but given the results he consistently produced last season, that didn't really matter.
However, he's been allowed to move along the M8 without much fuss. With Jamestown running the numbers, Hearts will now always back themselves to replace anyone who leaves. It's the same for players. McInnes waxed lyrical about the tolls at his disposal, but wasn't always as keen to play the players he signed based on the data provided.
Christian Borchgrevink, Jordi Altena and Rogers Mato are the prime examples, and it won't have exactly have been met with much enthusiasm by Bloom. So from the outside looking in, it looks very much like a case of a convenient outcome presenting itself before a decision was eventually made further down the line - much like Rangers with Danny Rohl. The Jamestown factor means simply listing the obvious names that surface every time the job comes up is pointless.
That's not to say strong domestic candidates won't be considered. In fact USG's approach suggests it's maybe more likely than plucking an obscure name from a lesser known destination, but more on that later. John McGlynn has done wonders with Falkirk and is steeped in Hearts. He was in the conversation this time last year, but now seems unlikely.
Stephen Pressley will no doubt also come up given his previous with the Jambos, but again, that's probably based more on sentiment without knowing his Jamestown rating. A better indication may lie in looking at how Brighton and Union Saint-Gilloise - the two other clubs Bloom holds an interest in - went about things. However, they walked before they could run.
After Mickey Adams' short lived return just as Bloom was taking control, Russell Slade was the next permanent appointment, but only lasted six months before the search was on again. That's when they branched out a bit more, but still kept being replaced by Oscar Garcia. t familiar with Gus Poyet.
The Uraguyan transformed the club, leading them to the League One title and establishing them as playoff contenders in the Championship before being sacked for gross misconduct following a controversial defeat to Crystal Palace. Oscar Garcia was his replacement and lasted a season as Brighton branched out a little further. Sami Hypia didn't last long, but Chris Hughton's tenure that followed was stable and successful.
Within three years, he took Brighton up as champions and kept them up before his sacking in 2019. With their status established, this is when the club started to think outside the box a little more. Graham Potter is now a well known name, but he wasn't when Swansea City took a chance on him in 2018 after a miraculous rise in Sweden with Ostersund.
Brighton saw enough during one season in South Wales to go and get him in and by the end of his second campaign, he'd racked up a record Premier League points total before guiding them ti a highest-ever finish of ninth the following year. That caught Chelsea's eye and they pounced.
But as his since been shown that simply taking staff - which the Blues have done frequently from Brighton - doesn't bring with it the Jamestown knowledge and Potter flopped at Stamford Bridge. he lost 4-1 on his return to the Amex and wa sacked before the end of the campaign. Brighton simply upgraded.
Roberto Di Zerbi was their most ambitious appointment to date after success in Serie A and with Shakthar Donetsk, albeit was dismissed by many given he didn't much anything in the way of a profile in the UK. He lead them to a top seven finish and European football for the first time in the club's history.
The following season, he lead them into the Europa League knockouts, but cracks appeared over recruitment in January and and he was mutually consented the following summer, replaced by Fabian Hurzeler. The former St Pauli boss was and remains the youngest in the Premier League and it's his on which assumptions over the type of coach hearts might go for next are made.
But that was only Brighton's approach after years of going for at least somewhat tried and tested options. USG are on a similar path. Felice Mazzu replaced Marc Grosjean in 2020 following a short-lived spell as Genk boss, where he was Philippe Clement's successor. He promptly took them back to the top flight for the first time since 1973.
Incredibly, they finished top of the pile after the regular season going into the playoffs and eventually finished as runners up in an erie prequel to Hearts' campaign last term, having lead since October for 200 days. Brussels rivals Anderlecht made their move for Mazzu and his switch sparked bad feeling between the clubs. USG replaced him with his assistant Karel Geraerts, handing the Belgian his first top team job.
He took their title challenge to the final day, but was on the move weeks later after contract talks broke down. Former Belgian international Sebastien Pocognoli was next in the hotseat, having worked as USG's U21 coach under Mazzu. To say it was an inspired move is an understatement as he guised the club to a first top flight title in 90 years before Monaco came calling last October.
Again, USG stayed Belgian, appointing former Anderlecht Boss David Huber and again, USG were title challengers, missing out by four points to Club Brugge. Continuity has been the name of the game there under Bloom and it's working for them, so don;t discount Hearts shopping Scottish again this summer.
