Despite government grants, the initial cost of heat pumps remains a significant obstacle for most homeowners, according to heat pump installers. While the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 grants, the overall cost can still reach £10,000, exceeding the price of a new gas boiler. Installers call for increased government support, such as interest-free loans or higher grant amounts, to accelerate the transition to heat pumps.

Heat pump installer Mike Sammon said most people don't have 'five, six, seven or eight grand spare' to fit a heat pump in their homeis the “number one barrier” to greater uptake across the UK and the Government must step in to help, say those on the frontline of installation.Despite the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offering grants of £7,500 to transition to heat pumps , the initial outlay for households can still be up to £10,000.

“Here in the North West, where I live and work, most people don’t have five, six, seven or eight grand spare”, he said, “Most of our heat pump customers are motivated to spend more to be green or to future-proof their home if they are having renovation works”, he said. He did an initial course and then further training with the firm Heat Geek and is now a “Heat Geek Elite” certified installer.

The previous government also pledged from 2035 it would be illegal to buy a new gas boiler regardless of the age of your home, although Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has suggested he will scrap this hard deadline.Charlotte Lee, chief executive of the Heat Pump Association, said more people are training to become heat pump installers but warned that increased consumer demand is needed “to encourage trained individuals to become active in the workforce”.

He said many small firms were also hampered by “too much paperwork” to become certified to carry out heat pump installations. He would like to see that simplified to encourage more firms to push ahead with heat pump work. They run on electricity and so the cost of it has a direct impact on consumer demand.

He said: “I would like our work to one day be 100 per cent heat pumps as I have never managed to not heat a home efficiently and comfortably with heat pumps.
