Large cross-party support for the runway ensured it passed in the House of Commons last June, but several high-profile MPs were against it. Boris Johnson famously said he would"lie down in front of the bulldozers" if the runway was approved and Conservative MP for Richmond Park Zac Goldsmith quit his party in opposition, but later rejoined.Construction of the runway could begin in 2021, with it going into use in 2026.
