Rather than even levels of warming across the globe, explained Dr Chris Huntingford of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, “complex patterns may emerge where some locations become prone to a much more rapid ramp-up of temperature extremes, others less so”. And, of course, more heat in the system means that heatwaves will be hotter. “Both length and intensity of heatwaves increases as long as we keep warming the planet by virtue of emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It’s simple physics and nothing will change that,” said Dr Haustein.
