The storm system is battering the UK and Ireland from Friday into Saturday
Several rain and wind warnings have been issued as Storm Betty is sweeping in on Friday night. Irish forecaster Met Eireann has issued a status orange wind and rain warning for three counties – Cork, Waterford and Kilkenny – which will be in place from 9pm on Friday until 3am on Saturday.
The Met Office has also issued a wind warning for counties Antrim and Down, in place from 6pm on Friday until noon on Saturday, which brings a risk of strong winds that could disrupt transport and temporary infrastructure. There is also “a good chance” drivers in affected areas could be delayed by spray and standing water, and rail passengers could face longer journeys. Holidaymakers beginning their summer getaway are advised to check the Met Office app and social media channels for updates and brace themselves for longer journey times.
Marquees and tents that may be used by campers in Snowdonia could also fall down in the gusts while caravans and lorries may struggle on some roads. Homes could also lose power for a short time in affected areas, the forecaster warned.
