Verisk Maplecroft study shows that mines in Canada, Australia most at risk
Research undertaken by risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft shows that 25% of the world's copper projects will be at 'high' or 'very high' risk for extreme precipitation by 2050.Sites in Canada, Australia and the DRC are the most exposed to the extreme weather conditions, the body said, citing data sourced in collaboration with mining analytics platform Costmine Intelligence .Risk scores are allocated on a scale running from 10 to 0, with 0 indicating highest risk.
Canada and Australia account for just under half of the 718 copper projects benchmarked within the analysis, which focuses on mine sites tagged at ‘advanced exploration' stage or further within the Costmine Intelligence platform.The number of Canadian copper sites facing high or very high risks from extreme precipitation is set to more than double, from 16 projects currently to 42 by mid-century .
