Scotland is facing severe weather conditions with widespread snow and ice warnings issued by the Met Office. The warnings cover a large part of the country, with potential for heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, and icy surfaces.

The weather is continuing to wreak havoc in Scotland , with the Met Office issuing more warnings. The new yellow weather warnings are in place from Thursday afternoon until Friday morning. One alert for ice covers the entire west coast, while the other is for snow and ice, and includes everything from northern Perthshire up to Shetland, meaning the majority of the country is facing extreme weather conditions. The snow and ice warning is in place from 4pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday.

It covers parts of Central Scotland, from Pitlochry northwards, stretching as far west as Fort William and Ullapool, where it meets the other warning. The super wintry conditions will see snow showers throughout these areas, with 3-7cm of snowfall is likely in places and 10cm or more is possible above 300 metres. Across Shetland, much of this may fall during a short spell in the afternoon, alongside strong and gusty winds leading to blizzard conditions. Rain or sleet is likely along some coasts and at lower levels towards the west of the warning area. There is a risk of ice on untreated wet surfaces on Thursday night, which could lead to some injuries from slips and falls. The ice warning stretches from Gretna at the border with England all the way up the west coast of Scotland to Cape Wrath at the northwestern tip of the mainland. It includes Glasgow, as well as all of Ayrshire, most of Argyll and Bute, and all of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. It is in effect from 5pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday. Temperatures will dip below freezing following a long spell of rain and sleet on Thursday night. This will spark worries of large blankets of ice on untreated surfaces, especially inland, so be careful when out on the roads or pathways.
