Sewage spills took place overnight, while in Swindon discharges have been ongoing for 10 hours or more
Beyond the confines of the M25, however, sewage continued to pour into the Thames and its tributaries. In Swindon, 11 different storm overflows began discharging in the early hours of Monday morning and were still doing so up to 10 hours later.
Southern Water, which provides live sewage data for its coastal sites, showed 31 discharges over the last 24 hours, with some ongoing, stretching from the Isle of Wight to Hastings in Sussex. “Of course, what matters most is stopping the need for the discharges and we have published plans to upgrade over 250 of our sewage treatment works and sewers, including our sites in the wider Swindon area.
