Concerns rise over HECS debt interest charges applied nine months earlierIndependent MP Kylea Tink says Australians need to understand the flaws in the current system, which permits being charged interest on a debt incurred nine months prior rather than reflecting the real current amount. 'I have one young man who's worked so hard to get his engineering degree, finally got a good paying job this year and decided he was going to focus on paying his HECS debt down,' Ms Tink told Sky News Australia. 'Started at $20,000 at the beginning of the year, he's been paying $1,000 monthly. 'So his real debt now is only $8,000. 'But he will be charged 7.1 per cent on $20,000, and that debt will be added to his HECS debt before he rolls over.'
