and suggested that this could be the Year of The Goalie. Our committee actually nominated five among the eight players put forward in the male player category. Two of those five — Lundqvist and Vernon — made it in the actual Hall of Fame voting. A third, Barrasso, also made the cut this time around.It’s a distinct about-face because up until this year, only seven goaltenders had been elected in the male player category in the past 30 years.
What’s puzzling, however, is that Alex Mogilny, long considered one of the most dominant scorers of his generation, was passed over again. Mogilny had 990 career points in 1,032 games; scored 76 goals one remarkable season, and was a pioneer in that he had to defect from Russia in order to make it to the NHL. —Ouellette’s Hall of Fame credentials are overwhelming. Let’s name a few:
She was one of the most dominant players in the game; U.S. defenders have told me she was the hardest player to play against, even on teams that featured Hayley Wickenheiser. Ouellette never lost an Olympic final in her near 20 year career, winning four straight gold medals – one of only five athletes to win a gold medal at four-straight Olympic Winter Games.She’s third-all-time in games played with the Canadian national team and ranks third in scoring with 84 goals and 234 points in 205 international games.Outside the international game, Oullette was a two-time MVP in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and won the league’s championship four times.
Let’s not forget that 14 people couldn’t agree last year that this was a Hall of Fame career. It’s a year late, but it’s incredibly well-deserved. —Hall of Fame voting is conducted by an 18-member committee and candidates must receive at least 14 votes to be elected. A maximum of four retired male players, two retired female players, two builders or one builder and one retired official may be inducted in a single year.
