As 90 degree temperatures approach the First Coast, here's how you can beat the heat.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Heat is the deadliestThis week is Heat Safety Awareness Week, and we can never touch up on heat safety too much here on the First Coast.If someone is becoming dizzy or nauseous, they’re likely experiencing heat exhaustion, and need to sip cool water and rest in a cool area. If their dizziness becomes severe, they become confused or pass out, they are experience heat stroke and 911 needs to be called.
“And to be honest with you, we use them on our dogs because, you know, we forget about our pets, but our pets are really susceptible to heat as well," said Al Sandrik, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Jacksonville. And pets and children can easily be forgotten in the back seat of a car. Last year, 29 people died in hot vehicles. Even with temperatures in the 80s, the inside of your car can be in the triple digits in just 20 minutes.
“Fortunately, the car makers have understood this is a problem," said Sandrik."They’re putting alarms in or notices that say ‘hey, check the back seat’. Make sure that’s turned on in your car if you have small kids or pets that you tend to bring with you.” The National Weather Service will be testing a product called HeatRisk this summer to help portray the threats from heat waves.
