Forecasters say any area of the Garden State could have an isolated tornado touch down on Friday or Friday night as intense thunderstorms with heavy tropical moisture sweep in.

Weather forecasters say New Jersey faces a legitimate tornado threat on Friday because of strong thunderstorms linked to the heavy moisture and warm air from Tropical Storm Debby., but also isolated tornadoes, as strong storm cells are expected to sweep across our region during the day and night on Friday.

The main risk factor is New Jersey’s location — on the east side of Debby’s main batch of moisture and gusty winds, said Mike Lee, a meteorologist for the Forecasters say isolated tornadoes could touch down in any area of New Jersey on Friday, Aug. 9, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby merge with a cold front and spark strong thunderstorms.Lee said the combination of warm, moist air and winds associated with a tropical system can stir up the atmosphere and boost the chances of a funnel cloud forming when strong thunderstorms develop. If a funnel cloud reaches the ground, it’s a tornado.

“There’s gonna be impacts,” he noted. “There’s gonna be heavy rain, there’s gonna be damaging winds and tornadoes tomorrow.”
