A hero off-duty RNLI lifeguard has been hailed for saving the lives of two young children at a Scots beach. Callum McDonald, from Dundee , had been on a surfing trip at Farr Bay near Thurso in the Highlands when he spotted two bodyboarders in the water on July 5.
After seeing the youngsters being dragged by the rip at a reasonable speed, Callum urged the bodyboarders to swim to him - but soon learned they were too tired. He said: "I was insistent on taking them one at a time to ensure their safety, but they were so scared and panicked that neither of them wanted to be left alone. I decided that them holding onto the leash was the next best resort and began to paddle back."
By this time, the two individuals had lost their bodyboards and weren’t doing well at keeping themselves afloat. Callum continued: "Unfortunately, my long board wasn’t big enough for the two of them, but I eventually kicked them back in and got them ashore."
