Born in 1846, Michael Davitt was only nine when he began working in a cotton mill in Ewood Bridge
A two-day celebration of Irish history, heritage and culture, will also showcase the life and legacy of people’s champion and social reformer Michael Davitt.
Born in 1846, Davitt was only nine when he began working in a cotton mill in Ewood Bridge. While working in another mill in Baxenden, aged 11, he got his right arm caught in a machine and it had to be amputated.A cotton manufacturer John Dean then became his benefactor and Davitt was educated in a local Methodist school for four years. After studying Irish history, he became politicised and joined the Fenians, the Irish nationalist secret society.
He became a patron of both the Gaelic Athletic Association and Glasgow Celtic football club, an organisation founded on charitable principles. He wrote six books, edited a socialist newspaper and spent several years as an MP for North Meath and South Mayo.
