Herron had his contract with Larne “terminated by mutual agreement” back in 2022 after images circulated online of him wearing a t-shirt with a ‘pro-IRA’ message
John Herron insists he is ready to bounce back from his "biggest mistake" as he looks to reignite his football career.
Since then he has played for Australian NPL side Dandenong City and Gibraltar side Manchester 1962, and also took time out to recover from injury. He told Ballymena's YouTube channel: "I have a lot of positives from my career, but looking at my whole Northern Irish experience, in my opinion it is a little bit of a letdown because of what happened in the end.
Herron is hoping to rebuild his career at the Showgrounds. He also accepts he has to sway the opinion of some fans following his 2022 controversy. A number of clubs were keen to bring Herron back to the Irish League, but the midfielder says it was a "no-brainer" to join Ballymena United.
