At just 16, Hezly Rivera is poised to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics as the youngest athlete on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team — and Team USA as a whole. During the Games, Hezly Rivera, who hails from Oradell, New Jersey, will compete alongside Olympic veterans Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee and Jade Carey. In a conversation with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb following the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Hezly Rivera called the experience “surreal.” “I cannot believe that I’m here right now.
Her parents enrolled her in gymnastics classes after a birthday party Hezly Rivera’s talent was discovered at a very young age. When she was 5, she attended a friend’s birthday party at a gymnastics facility. Her natural abilities stood out to the staff, who recommended that her parents enroll her in gymnastics lessons, per NBC Olympics. “The coaches approached us. They said, ‘You got to bring her in,’” Henry Rivera shared with The New York Post July 8. “She made the team on the first audition.
