A looming lorry driver shortage in the UK risks jeopardizing government ambitions for increased housebuilding and infrastructure projects. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) warns that the logistics industry faces 'significant structural challenges' and needs to recruit 40,000 drivers annually for the next five years to meet the target of building 1.5 million homes. Previous government attempts to address the shortage, such as funding skills bootcamps and relaxing working hours, have proven largely ineffective.
Government efforts to recruit new and younger HGV drivers have failed leaving future housing and infrastructure projects at riskA looming lorry driver shortage threatens Government plans to ramp up housebuilding and infrastructure projects in order to drive economic growth.
The decision to relax working hours was thought to have had a negative impact as it put off new recruits who disliked the unsociable hours and perceived it increased the dangers of the job. “One of the big targets for the government is the 1.5 million houses plan. You can’t do that without supplies like bricks and mortar being delivered quickly. With supply chains, we always think of toilet rolls but the real impact is on the construction industry”
