The charming village is often referred to as a 'hidden gem', boasting ancient historical sites and one of the lowest crime rates in the UKAccording to 2011 figures, Monyash had a population of merely 314 residents, though this modest number shouldn't fool you; the settlement's heritage stretches back to Neolithic times.
The nearby stone circle, Arbor Low, dates from 2000 BC and is believed to have been constructed by inhabitants of what is now Monyash. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Monyash is also recognised for its low crime levels and, in 2024, was listed among the safest destinations to visit in the UK by holiday home insurance provider Schofields.
At the time, they said: "This is a hidden gem of a village with a remarkably low crime rate of 12.05 crimes per 100,000 people, making it the 32nd safest village in Derbyshire.
" Alongside its breathtaking setting and comparative security, the village is also essential viewing for history enthusiasts. From Arbor Low to the settlement's village cross, dating from the 1300s, there's ample evidence of its extensive past. Visitors can also explore the Norman-era St Leonards Church, alongside an 18th-century Quaker chapel, built during a period when the village became a Quaker stronghold, largely due to the influence of resident John Gratton.
One recent visitor to Arbor Low shared their thoughts on TripAdvisor, writing: "Fantastically huge site and presence. Can only imagine the scale and sensation at this place when it was in full function.
" They added: "All the surrounding alignments can be seen at various points right onto the horizon demonstrating impressively the ancients knowledge of movements and what energetic properties each cycle brought to the seasons and the life as a whole. "
