Businesses love their hush-hush location
When you're in a rush, amid the hustle and bustle of Nottingham city centre, it's easy to overlook some of the quirky little alleyways. But these passages, away from the main shopping streets, are filled with a wealth of hidden gems.
"I did consider a couple of other properties but this was the best location. But getting people to come up the alleyway is not easy. It's been great being opposite the White Rabbit Teahouse as that has brought in a lot of custom. I have a board at the bottom but everything else is through established customers, Instagram, TikTok, and word of mouth."
Frances said: "People come here because they know we're here. You can't rely on the footfall of passing trade so much. Of course, people do stumble across you every now and again but by and large it's people that know you that walk up the alleyway." The flagstone path serves as a shortcut between Upper Parliament Street and Long Row, where a sign by the entrance has an arrow pointing to 'good stuff this way.'
Tequila aficionados make a beeline for 400 Rabbits which specialises in the spirit and mezcal. Owner James Aspell said: "We love being on Hurts Yard, people often describe it as Nottingham's little Diagon Alley. There's a great little community on the street with businesses like Rob's Records and Hairport and a great selection of little bars like ours, all independent and unique.
Sandwiched between the walls of The Works and Primark in Long Row, the independent shop has been in Swann's Yard for nearly 11 years but its presence is only just being discovered by some. "Rent is a fraction of what it would be if we were on the main street. Because our rent is so low our rates are accordingly so that means we can be right in the city centre and afford to survive but more importantly we can sell the books we want to sell rather the books we would have to sell if we were on the main street.
