The Bureau of Meteorology says there's a 75 per cent chance of cyclone development off the coast of North Queensland on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

Senior meteorologist Kimba Wong said a cyclone in the area in October would be an "interesting phenomenon". "But of course, it's a really timely reminder for us to get a little bit more familiar with our tropical cyclone forecast and warning service and start considering our cyclone preparedness as well."Cyclone season typically spans November to April, but Ms Wong said it was not unheard of to see cyclones form outside that window.
"There is a tendency to have fewer than average tropical cyclone during El Niño years – that's for the Australian region though," Ms Wong said."When we think about more broadly what's happening around the world, global ocean temperatures have been the highest on record for their respective months since April.
