Australians planning on visiting one European country should be alert to the 'very likely' potential of a terrorist attack, the government has warned.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is warning holidaymakers planning on visiting Sweden to"exercise a high degree of caution" over concerns about a heightened risk of terrorism.

"Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Sweden," DFAT's SmartTraveller website says. The country's Justice Minister, Gunnar Strömmer, went further, saying Sweden had gone from being a"legitimate" target for terrorists to"being a more prioritised target" for attacks. Several counter-protestors were also present and police watched on to ensure there was no confrontation between the two groups. There have also been protests in retaliation, including the violent storming of Sweden's Iraqi embassy last month.
