A crumbling World War II-vintage ship stranded on a submerged reef, the Sierra Madre has long been a flashpoint between Manila and Beijing in their territorial dispute over the waters.
The June 17 incident in BRP Sierra Madre saw the most violent actions of China Coast Guard personnel so far, leading to what the Philippine military deemed as “looting” of its disassembled high-powered guns and even caused the thumb amputation of one of its naval personnel. Trinidad also confirmed that an intrusive patrol was carried out by Chinese Coast Guard vessels off the coast of Lubang Islands in Mindoro on Sunday.
The Navy also said Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea have decreased after Manila and China sought de-escalation in the region.
