Every game is important during a high school football season, but this year’s Northside Methodist Knights team has a unique importance to their games this season.
“We have coined this year, ‘The Bowl Year’ because there is not a team on our schedule that we have beaten in school history whether we haven’t played them before or just have not beaten them before,” Northside Methodist head coach Stefan Gainey said of the Knights, who enter their fifth year in the Alabama High School Athletic Association. “So, we have given each week a bowl game theme ... Every week is an opportunity to be a legend.
The Knights’ only previous opponents are Houston Academy , Providence Christian , Slocomb and Wicksburg . They have not played the other six foes – Pataula Charter , Samson, Alabama Christian, Prattville Christian, Montgomery Academy and Trinity. “We had 12-13 seniors who graduated, and we bring eight-nine back, including some that haven’t played in a while,” Gainey.
A pair of seniors return at linebacker, including Jordan Sanford , who is getting some interest from small colleges. Coleman Fullbright is the other returning senior linebacker.Other expected see a lot of action on defense are Everett Crum on the D-line, Carter Wells at linebacker, Kingston Whaley , Jeremy Jeffcoat , Issac Hancock and Kyle Kirchhoff in the secondary. Kirchhoff, a basketball standout, is playing football for the first time.
The Knights feature a new quarterback after the graduation of Harrison Hicks. John Michael Mordecai, who was JV quarterback two years ago, but didn’t play last year, is expected to be the QB starter. Mordecai, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound junior, threw three touchdowns in a spring game in 2023 against Barbour County.
Whaley is a returning starter at running back and will share the backfield workload with Wells and Sanford.Jeffcoat is a returning starter at wide receiver. Grayson Barbaree , a soccer standout, and Hancock, a transfer from Rehobeth, are others expected to start at wide receiver spots.
