THE chief of the Public Attorney's Office (PAO) requested higher pay for the agency's senior officials.

PAO chief Persida Rueda–Acosta asked the Department of Budget and Management for a salary upgrade for the positions of the chief public attorney, deputy chief public attorney, public attorney 5 and public attorney 4.The DBM had declined PAO's earlier request, saying the salaries, allowances and other emoluments entitled prosecutors in the National Prosecution Service do not apply to PAO lawyers.

They said then Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who penned the ruling, pointed out that 'the intent of RA 9406 to establish and maintain the parity in qualifications between the senior officials of the PAO and the NPS must be respected.'The high court also rejected CSEB's contention that the declassification of positions in the NPS cannot benefit the PAO because of a supposed difference in their functions.
