The Hilliard Davidson Wildcat community came together for Military Appreciation Night at Friday night’s game against Canal Winchester.
While there were tributes throughout the night, one particular moment honored two special members of the 1965-66 Wildcat Football Team who gave their all for our country –Buckeye who left national championship team to join US Army awarded gold pants
“Anytime we can honor those who have served our country and given the ultimate for our country, it's a blessing that we have the ability to honor them and do so with a very grateful heart,” said Ed Palmer, teammate and friend of both. Bobby Gray was killed in action in Vietnam on August 30th, 1969, in a helicopter crash exactly 55 years ago.
Rick Hausman was part of the Ohio State football team that would ultimately win the National Championship under Coach Woody Hayes. But before the Rose Bowl, Hausman joined the Army. 71 days after arriving in Vietnam, he died in a firefight, providing cover for his wounded comrades. He ultimately received the Silver Star.Hausman’s sacrifice became the inspiration behind the ‘Hausman Trophy,” given to the top cadet in the Ohio State Army ROTC program.
The ‘Hausman Trophy’ will now also find a place of honor in the trophy case of Hilliard Davidson, honoring their hometown hero.
