A congregation wants to take ownership of the 1798 Peace Church building in Hampden Township from the state.
The Peace Church building in Hampden Township has witnessed Confederate cannons, interdenominational church services, weddings and concerts in its 225-year history. After more than 150 years of occasional use, the historic church could return to weekly worship services and a congregation that calls it home this year.
The church built in 1798 is believed to be the oldest church in Cumberland County in its original condition. It was shared by German farmers of the Reformed faith and a Lutheran congregation until 1866, then stood vacant until 1963 when historical societies took interest, leading to its acquisition by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1967.
Masich said local historians had “many tools” like Pennsylvania’s historic marker program, and no one from the West Shore Historical Society has ever proposed a marker for the Peace Church. The fact is, however, that it already If the new owners of Peace Church would destroy it, which is not the intent of the new congregation, the damage would be done, Lynx said. There would be no going back. She also said a church could go bankrupt or encounter other issues that could prohibit it from properly maintaining the property.
The church has already sunk what McCarl calls “a considerable amount of money” into the proposed transfer, focusing on what it can do to keep the integrity of the building and not cause discomfort to the community. Right now, the building is used for the occasional wedding or summer concert series. McCarl says it’s a worthy goal for it to get more use.
