An ancient canoe, carved from a single giant log, has been restored and moved to Perth Museum where it will have a key position on display when the new city attraction opens next year.
A key attraction of the new Perth Museum has been moved into place as the countdown continues until its Spring 2024 opening.
It was acquired by Perth and Kinross Council for display and preservation at Perth Museum and Art Gallery, with generous support from the National Fund for Acquisitions. After 10 years on display at Perth Museum and Art Gallery, the wood had started to ‘unroll’ and flatten out. One of the most exciting archaeological discoveries made in Tayside this century, the logboat was first officially reported in 2001 in the mudflats at Carpow during a summer of exceptionally low river levels.
Radiocarbon-dated to around 1000 BC, the logboat is one of the oldest and best-preserved of its kind in Scotland, giving a tantalising glimpse of the thriving life and advanced technology of the past on Perth’s doorstep.
