The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct have been granted planning permission for their project to restore and enhance the historic viaduct. The viaduct, built in 1877, is one of only two surviving wrought-iron viaducts in England and will be transformed to attract visitors from across the UK and beyond.
A group's vision for a historic Nottinghamshire viaduct to draw in people from across the UK and beyond has taken a step forward. .
The last passenger train crossed the huge Victorian structure in 1964, with goods trains stopping in 1968. It is one of only two surviving wrought-iron viaducts in England and crosses the River Erewash to connect Awsworth, Nottinghamshire with Ilkeston, Derbyshire.Chair of The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, John Scruton, said the group would now be putting its efforts into realising the landmark's potential.
The project, described by the group as "vital", will now create an accessible ramp for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing accessibility and active travel routes, as well as a new travel centre. It said the new visitor centre and 22-space car park would help turn the viaduct into a visitor attraction.
