St. Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as St. Ignatius Church, is suffering from widespread water damage, necessitating major repairs to its roof, spire, and other structures.

A historic Preston church is facing significant repairs due to extensive water damage . St. Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral , also known as St. Ignatius Church, has been plagued by issues including wet rot , gutter failure, and a compromised drainage system. These problems were uncovered during inspections carried out in September and documented in a report submitted to Preston City Council.

The report highlights the severity of the water damage, particularly affecting the cathedral's spire, vestry roof, and south porch. The distinctive spire, the first of its kind on a church in Preston when it was erected in 1836, is experiencing significant drainage issues. The vestry roof has suffered from decades of water seepage and gutter failure, compromising its structural integrity. The roof over the south porch has completely failed, impacting the supporting joists. These issues have led to widespread wet rot, damaging roof timbers and wall plaster. To address these problems, a plan is underway to restore the building to a stable and watertight condition. This includes replacing gutters, improving water discharge capacity, replacing slates, installing new lead flashing, repairing deteriorating stonework, and replacing timber flooring within the tower. The church cross will also be re-fixed with new stainless steel fittings. The initial assessment report warned that the extent of the damage may ultimately require the replacement of entire roofs rather than localized repairs. The church was previously part of the Diocese of Lancaster but closed briefly in 2014 due to a declining congregation. It reopened in 2015 for the local Syro-Malabar community of Indian Catholics and was granted cathedral status by Pope Francis in 2016
