Nearly half of all completed cell searches were positive for some form of illicit contraband
Prisoners housed at HMP Liverpool were caught hiding drones used to smuggle mobile phones, drugs and weapons in their cells.
Twenty drones were found during the cell searches and 191 drone sightings had been recorded within the prison up until the end of 2022. The report, which was released earlier this month, noted several police operations took place as a result of the drone usage and a number of arrests had been made. These arrests led to at least one conviction, according to the board's report.
The report found that some staff members at the prison had helped prisoners secure contraband. Security concerns were raised after "there were 15 occasions whereby staff either brought or attempted to bring illicit items into the prison". On one occasion a set of keys even left the premises, posing a big safety risk.
"Missed adjudications have occurred due to staff shortages meaning that no action has been taken on some prisoners who have had a positive MDT result.
