The Self-Assessment deadline is January 31
HM Revenue and Customs is urging people not to delay completing and filing their Self-Assessment tax return before January 31 or they could face a £100 fine. Those who miss the deadline may also incur additional penalties for not filing on time.
HMRC said that in total, nearly £67million-worth of Self-Assessment tax bills have been paid through its official app since April 2022 - the equivalent of almost 65,000 taxpayers. In December 2022, 14,170 customers used the app to settle their tax bill, marking the highest number of app payments in one month since the facility was launched in February 2022.
Customers who are unable to pay what they owe in full, may be able to set up a payment plan, allowing them to spread the cost into manageable monthly instalments. Since April 2022, 45,600 Self-Assessment customers have set up a Time to Pay arrangement and in December, around 10,500 customers set up a plan, totalling more than £36million in tax.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “We want to help Self-Assessment customers meet their obligations and HMRC offers a range of options to help customers pay their tax return bill.”Using HMRC’s self-serve Time to Pay facility means customers benefit from a tailored payment plan via monthly Direct Debits. This means they can spread the cost of their tax bill based on how much is owed and the length of time they need to pay.
