Two fallen soldiers have officially been recognised on a World War I memorial in Hobart after having been left off because of a century-old oversight.
In an intimate ceremony today, Remembrance Day, Second Lieutenant Colin Chalmers and Private James Glass finally received this missing recognition for their sacrifice. On a gentle rise in Hobart, surrounded by bushland, the Soldiers Memorial Avenue acts as a powerful reminder of servicemen and women who lost their lives to war.
Its latest are those of the two solders whose were names mistakenly omitted due to an error on the Hobart Town Hall World War I Roll of Honour."On that roll of honour, where a soldier had died, they would put a cross next to their name to represent the death," Mr Wadsley said. Artist Clayton Tremlett has visited almost every WWI memorial across regional Victoria to honour diggers. For some, the avenue was manifestation of heartbreaking news they did not want to accept.
