A deal to bring the Arizona Coyotes to Utah may be close, but not yet finished as Utahns get excited for the possibility of a Beehive State NHL team.
If the Coyotes take another trail—and the NHL bypasses Utah for new ice—the man who pushed a plan to entice professional hockey here, said it would be a big mistake.
“The NHL would be a fool not to come to Salt Lake,” Senator Dan McCay, R-Salt Lake County, said. “Go down the list of all the things Utah has going for it. If they don’t come here, I would be disappointed in the NHL. That’s how I feel about it. This is a no-brainer solution.“McCay is not familiar with details of the "hockey for Utah" discussions, which may be taking on more urgency.
It’s expected the Salt Lake City Council will approve a half-cent sales tax hike in the city to finance a “revitalization zone” surrounding the Delta Center. The money could finance Delta Center upgrades or a new arena, plus an entertainment district. 2News also reached out to the owner of the Coyotes, the NHL, and the mayor of Scottsdale, who may have sway over whether the Coyotes stay in Arizona or migrate north.A voice message at the offices of the Coyotes' owner was not returned, we have not had a reply to an email to the NHL, and a spokesman for the City of Scottsdale said the mayor is not doing interviews on the topic.
In the meantime, people on Main Street in Salt Lake in the afternoon said they would welcome an NHL team to the Beehive State.“I haven’t really watched any games, but I know my dad and my brother have watched a couple,” a woman named Oakley said.And a man named Laurent said he also has never been to a hockey game, but would go.
