Glasgow Live invited readers to share their memories of Hogmanay celebrations, revealing enduring traditions like house cleaning, festive meals, and gathering with loved ones. Many recounted stories of tidying homes, putting on their best clothes for good luck, and enjoying spreads of traditional treats and drinks.
At a time of year when people reflect on changes and family traditions, Glasgow Live put out requests for memories of Hogmanay celebrations past and present.
It wasn’t just homes which would be scrubbed up for the occasion, several people mentioned putting on their best clothes to bring luck for the new year. It sounds like it was rather more than a thimbleful of drink enjoyed by most though. Simon recalled “neighbours and family coming in at 0100 and stayed most of the night. The kids got donkey rides from an assortment of drunk uncles and neighbours.”
Opening doors and first footers A lot of commentors mentioned opening their doors and windows to hear the horns, but also as part of another tradition of welcoming in the new year.
