A holidaymaker tragically lost their life while climbing a Lake District mountain due to a fall that resulted in a fatal head injury.

A holidaymaker has sadly died while climbing a Lake District mountain in dense fog. The unnamed climber had a suspected fall which left them with a fatal head injury. The tragic incident is believed to have taken place 1,700ft up a densely foggy mountain on Boxing Day. Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) were called around 3pm on December 26th to help a man who was found unconscious at Grisedale Hause, near Grisedale Tarn - over 530-metres up in the Lake District .

Members of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead at the scene. Langdale and Ambleside MRT added: 'CPR was unsuccessful and he was sadly declared deceased. He was recovered to Keswick MRT base by a Coastguard helicopter.' The incident has been classified as 'fellwalking' and saw a team of 13 work for four and a half hours. Coniston Mountain Rescue team, who also assisted, explained that the suspected fall happened on Boxing Day which was a 'damp and foggy afternoon'. They said: 'We were called by Cumbria Police about a male found unresponsive with a head injury. 'The job was passed to Langdale Ambleside MRT (but) they subsequently asked for assistance for a long stretcher-carry, and we despatched a Land Rover and five team members who made their way up the hill. HM Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 was available and able to lift the casualty off the fell.
