National Highways has told drivers to allow more time for journeys to the airport
East Midlands Airport holidaymakers have been given a warning over M1 road and gas works that could delay their sunny getaway this summer. National Highways has told drivers to allow more time for journeys to the Castle Donington airport due to two sets of roadworks that will likely cause delays in the coming weeks.
A spokesperson for the highways authority said: "Heading to East Midlands Airport? Allow extra time to get there. As well as our emergency area work on M1 junctions 23a-25, Cadent Gas will close part of the A453 near Tonge for six weeks from Thursday, August 15. Northbound M1 traffic wanting the A453 should use junction 24."
While Cadent Gas work on gas pipelines under the A453's road surface, National Highways workers will be closing lane one of the M1 to build six additional emergency areas between junctions 23a and 25. Work began in February with the closure of one lane of the motorway so builders could safely clear vegetation and then install signage, CCTV and safety barriers.
National Highways further explained it was now on the construction phase of the scheme and would prioritise safety for road users and crews working on the highway by closing lane one and reducing the speed limit to 50mph in lanes two to four. The new emergency areas are due to be finished by the end of November 2024.
