Dorit Oliver-Wolff, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor, shares her harrowing story of survival and her unwavering commitment to educating the world about the horrors of the Holocaust.

Dorit Oliver-Wolff, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor, who spent four years in hiding with her mother, including nine months in a cellar without light or heating, says she will continue to educate people about the horrors of the Holocaust 'as long as I have a breath in my body'. Ms. Oliver-Wolff, who lives in Eastbourne, East Sussex, was forced to hide from the Nazis in Budapest at the age of five.

She recounts her experience as Sussex, Kent and Surrey commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, where over a million people perished. From 1941, Ms. Oliver-Wolff and her mother lived in constant fear, seeking refuge in various locations, including a cellar. She was caught twice, but miraculously escaped both times. On one harrowing occasion, she was betrayed by the woman who cared for her while she worked. Recalling the experience, Ms. Oliver-Wolff said: 'The door burst open, 'this is the stinking little Jew who is hiding here, she is contaminating the air. I just want to get rid of her'.' After being seized by Adolf Hitler's SS group, she was taken to a processing house in Budapest. From there, she escaped, clinging to life in excrement-filled sheets. In 2020, Ms. Oliver-Wolff was awarded a British Empire Medal for her tireless work in Holocaust education and awareness. She remains steadfast in her commitment to ensuring that the atrocities of the Holocaust are never forgotten. Memorial events were held on Monday in Tunbridge Wells and Woking, while people could attend a candle vigil in Brighton city centre until 17:00 GMT. Later on Monday evening, there was to be an event in Eastbourne, while Medway's commemoration took place at a school near Rochester
