Workers have filed a class-action lawsuit against former managers and supervisors of the Holyoke Soldiers' Home, where 84 veterans died and many more were sickened at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

. It was among the worst outbreaks at a U.S. long-term care facility in the pandemic.

The complaint from employees, filed Thursday in federal court, accuses managers and supervisors of making a series of"criminally catastrophic decisions" in their mishandling of COVID-19 in the facility. More than 80 employees were sickened, the complaint says. "You would tell them that this person's sick, and they really and truly acted like they didn't care," employee and plaintiff Debra Ragoonanan told NBC10 Boston."It's just so hurtful and so disappointing to see how they treat these people, and the staff right now."Sign up for NECN newsletters.

Among those named as defendants in the civil suit are the superintendent of the facility and its medical director during the outbreak, both of whom have faced other lawsuits."They don't understand what it is we've been through. The PTSD is major, and we've been hiding. For me to come out and tell you that I've contemplated suicide is a lot, because I'm always happy-go-lucky, but after that, it's just too much.

Frontiers | A tipping point of spreading viruses: Estimating the risk of household contact transmission of COVID-19Frontiers | A tipping point of spreading viruses: Estimating the risk of household contact transmission of COVID-19This paper proposes a model that visualizes the risk of contact infection to family members when going outspreads to various items at home. Behavior data after returning home are extracted from the behavior survey, such as location and contact objects. The data tables are created, including a behavior history table, behavior probability table, contact probability table, number of visits table, contact circulation table, etc. The material transmission rate table is created by measuring the virus transmission rate after contact with droplets in a virus experiment laboratory. In the experiment, the synthetic agent created from the acquired data probabilistically performs movement and contact behavior after returning home and reproduces the state in which the virus attached to the hand or belongings, when going out, propagates to objects at home. Next, we examined the risk of a second family member returning home. As a result, virus-attached contacts within around 30 minutes after returning home were widely confirmed around the entrance and kitchen, suggesting the effectiveness of early hand-washing behavior. And the experiment showed that even if the first person returning home disinfected their hands inside the entrance, the virus remained in a part of the entrance, and the virus was spread inside the room by the second person returning home.
