The Bibby Stockholm has been blighted by problems since it was docked at Portland Port last July, including a series of health and safety issues The Home Office has abandoned plans to move a group of asylum seekers to the Bibby Stockholm barge following protests.
However, after demonstrations from local residents who blocked coaches on 24 and 25 April, the Home Office confirmed it had changed its plans and would allow the asylum seekers to stay in Margate. “Going forwards, we’re ready to do this again. Community activism is a valid tool when it comes to protecting asylum seekers, and I think in this current climate is one that we should all consider.”
