The 31-year-old Hernández defeated the Royals shortstop to win his first Home Run Derby crown.
No. 1 seed Alec Bohm needed just one home run in the bonus round to oust No. 4 seed Teoscar Hernández. But Bohm couldn’t get the blast he needed, setting up the derby’s first swing off in its second semifinal with both tied at 14 homers. Each got three swings. Hernández went first and hit two home runs. Bohm hit one in his first two, but his final try landed short of the fence, sending Hernández into the final against Bobby Witt Jr.
The former Blue Jay got some advice from Toronto star and 2023 derby champion Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before the bonus round. It didn’t immediately help — Hernández hit just one home run before using all of his outs — but the words of wisdom might have paid dividends in the swing-off. Bohm started slow, with just one home run in his first nine pitches. When he took his timeout after 17 pitches, he had just three homers. “That’s not very many,” he said.
