Following the murder of three young girls by Axel Rudakubana, who was able to purchase a knife online despite being 17, Home Secretary Suella Braverman pledged to tighten regulations on online knife sales. Rudakubana used the knife to kill three girls and injure ten others at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The incident sparked calls for stricter measures to prevent underage access to bladed weapons.

Home Secretary vows to strengthen law after Axel Rudakubana was 'easily able' to buy blade online despite being 17The kitchen knife used by Rudakubana to murder three young girls and injure ten others, including eight children, on 29 July was still listed on Tuesday for just £1.70.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company takes its “responsibility around the sale of all age-restricted items – including bladed products – extremely seriously and have launched an urgent investigation in relation to this tragic case”. He also pleaded guilty to 10 charges of attempted murder and one charge of possession of a knife – all relating to the incident at Hart Street, Southport.

Amazon says it requires that all third-party sellers on its marketplace comply with the law on the sale of knives. This includes clearly listing products as being for over-18s, and requiring age verification on delivery. The National Business Crime Centre has said that sales of knives to people under the legal age “continues to be an issue for retail”.
