LancsLive speaks to individuals experiencing homelessness in Preston, exploring their struggles to survive the freezing temperatures and challenging conditions during the winter months.
With temperatures dropping as low as -5 in Preston during the recent cold spell, life on the streets is the harsh reality for those who have nowhere else to go. LancsLive spoke to several people on the streets of Preston to find out how they survive the cold days and freezing nights.Jamie has spent the last three years 'sofa surfing' in friends' homes, but often finds himself with nowhere to stay during the day.
"I was staying at my mate's house and giving him money towards bills but then, to add insult to injury, I was made redundant at work," Jamie said. "I felt awful that I couldn't keep contributing but I had debts I was paying off too and money got really tight." Worryingly, particularly for those living on the streets, the average age of death for rough sleepers is just 43. This is something Rob, 32, is more aware of than most.
"I felt like I'd let her down in a way," Rob said. "I had to let the council pay for it and it made me feel awful." "Folk have this impression that everyone on the streets is on drugs and while some are it's not true of everyone. Sometimes everything just aligns and anyone can find themselves with nothing; it's more common than people think."
