Simple and common mistakes could cost you this festive season
Families are being warned this year that cash-strapped local councils could play Scrooge over the festive season. If homeowners leave more rubbish than usual outside for collection or put it out on the wrong day councils are allowed to issue Fixed Penalty Notices , fining homeowners £80.
Sarah Day from Pay Less for Storage said: "Over the festive season, it’s easy for rubbish to pile up with all the extra packaging and Christmas waste. This can be an even bigger problem for families with children. While Santa might be willing to deliver toys, he’s unlikely to take the packaging away with him after.
"This issue is made all the worse by the fact that many councils change waste collection schedules over Christmas. This could catch homeowners unaware due to the annual confusion over Christmas waste collection dates. You’ll need to check your local council’s website or even their social media to get the most up-to-date information, rather than relying on what neighbours are doing.
