"They are very used to it. They are very hardened. And they are utterly undeterred," Crawford said, as protesters around her, wearing helmets and gas masks, crouched in anciticipation of further police action, but stayed put.However, Crawford said there is still a great deal of fear and anxiety about the demonstrations.

After a retreat from outside government headquarters, protesters piled barriers and other debris across a commercial street and set small fires. The demonstration is the latest in a series of pro-democracy protests that have plunged the Chinese-ruled city into its worst political crisis in decades. The clashes came on the fifth anniversary of a decision by China to curtail democratic reforms in the former British colony, which returned to China in 1997.
