A photographer puts two flagship camera phones head-to-head in a challenging shootout, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of AI-powered imaging.
As a photographer with over 14 years of experience, I believe we're closer than ever to smartphones replacing digital cameras. Recently, I spent time in Slovenia with Honor, capturing stunning landscape shots of Lake Bled using nothing but the Honor Magic 7 Pro. This phone, thanks to advancements in AI imaging tools, truly stood out as a powerful camera phone.
However, I've been testing the camera against competitors, including some during my trip to Slovenia, leading to a head-to-head camera phone shootout with my current smartphone, the Samsung S24 Ultra. To ensure fairness, I maintained the same aspect ratio and resolution for all images. Compare the 100% unedited images and galleries below to see the results of this ultimate camera phone comparison. The Honor Magic 7 Pro boasts a 50MP main camera, compared to the S24 Ultra's 200MP main camera. However, the Honor Magic 7 Pro has a larger aperture at f/1.4, allowing it to capture more light than the Samsung's f/1.7. Honor also seems to have the edge over Samsung in terms of the telephoto camera, featuring a 200MP f/2.6 72mm periscope lens with AI Super Zoom, compared to the S24 Ultra's 50MP f/3.4 111mm periscope lens. Both phones offer 100x zoom, which I put to the test. The image galleries reveal that both are exceptional camera phones (with Slovenia's beautiful landscapes adding to their appeal!). My Samsung S24 Ultra produced the sharpest unedited results in most cases, though by a minimal margin. The Honor Magic 7 Pro delivered the best final image with AI enhancements, resulting in more vibrant colors and hues. The Super Zoom on the Honor Magic 7 Pro shows immense potential, but I believe it's not quite refined yet. The AI-assisted gap filling is evident, and the result currently resembles an abstract painting more than a realistic image. The verdict: If you enjoy editing and tweaking images for the best result, the S24 Ultra provides the best starting point with its RAW capabilities. However, if you prioritize a shot that's ready to share immediately, the Honor Magic 7 Pro excels with its AI enhancements.

Samsung Q4 Profit Doubles, But Misses Estimates, Fueling Tech ConcernsSamsung Electronics reported more than double the operating profit in the fourth quarter compared to the previous year, but the figure fell short of analyst expectations. Concerns arose regarding Samsung's technological competitiveness, particularly in the face of its rival, SK Hynix. The company attributed the decline to cooling demand for computers and smartphones, coupled with increased investments in advanced chip manufacturing capacity. While Samsung faces challenges with oversupply in conventional memory chips, losses at its contract manufacturing arm, and delays in supplying HBM3E chips for Nvidia's AI products, CEO Jensen Huang expressed confidence in Samsung's ability to overcome these hurdles.
