Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but she'll be getting a golden statuette this year after all.
The two-time nominee is set to receive an honorary Oscar at the 2023 Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday.There are 30 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and no actor was ever nominated for their performance in one — until Bassett.
Now, Bassett has joined a small group of Black women to have multiple acting nominations: Whoopi Goldberg, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis. Her television career has equally spanned decades as she's appeared in American Horror Story and ER, among others.Lifetime achievements They are not necessarily awarded every year and are at the discretion of the board of governors.But quite often, they're not given out during the annual telecast.
Honorary Oscars have been around since the former president of the Screen Actors Guild George Murphy got one in 1950 at the 23rd Academy Awards.
