A chilling 999 call reveals the terror of a man kidnapped and forced to watch his friend be brutally murdered. David Barnshaw's death in 1999 on a Stockport industrial estate exposed a dark underbelly of crime and police corruption. The case, still unsolved after 25 years, highlights the desperate pleas for justice from Barnshaw's family.
In the muffled call, which lasted just over three minutes, he begs police for help - repeating the word 'please' some 53 times during the conversation. In the background, screams are heard; the screams of one of his friends being gratuitously tortured on an industrial estate near the M60 motorway.
He was kidnapped, bundled into his own car and driven to the industrial estate, where he was forced to drink petrol before being set on fire. It was a case that highlighted Stockport's criminal underbelly - and shocking police corruption. His friend - who became a key witness - was lifted out of the boot and, it seems, spared. He ran away, despite head and stomach injuries, and was treated in hospital.
The following month, arsonists torched the Stockport garage where the scorched remains of the Orion were being kept, detectives convinced it was a failed attempt to destroy evidence. Senior detectives were summoned to court to explain the omission. By 2003 the entire case had collapsed, after sensational evidence emerged that important information about another suspect had been kept from the court.
A case against GMP was brought by five of the six cleared defendants, with the force forced to pay a substantial legal bill.Speaking at the time, Martin Bottomley, Head of GMP’s Cold Case Unit, said: “No undetected or unresolved murder case is ever closed.
