Shocking footage reveals roads in Derna turning into a sea after torrents burst dams and floods tore through the Libyan city
The footage reveals the widespread destruction after a torrent burst dams on Sunday night and hurtled down a seasonal riverbed that bisects the city, washing multi-storey buildings into the sea with sleeping families inside.
More than 5,300 are dead in the catastrophic floods and thousands more missing, with Derna’s mayor saying the toll could reach as high as 20,000. Wrecked cars lay overturned and lamp posts were dragged down by the force of the floods which hit areas both east and west of the north African country, footage shows.

Usama Al Husadi, a 52-year-old driver, had been searching for his wife and five children since the disaster.
